Once upon a rainy day
I saw a sign on my way
The sign said a ship will sail
Across the seven seas away

Without food living in the street
A beggar living on my knees
I thought this will be the time
To leave all this behind

But God was not on my side
Through rain and storm many sailors died
And so many times I heard the cry
Oh, Lord tell me why
The Batavia must die

The captain was a good man
But the first mate the devils hand
And so we sailed across the sea
From heaven into tyranny 

So many months on the sea
No way out and not much to eat
On our way to India
We lost our way came to Australia

And God was not on my side
Through rain and storm many sailors died
And so many times I heard the cry
Oh, Lord tell me why
The Batavia must die

And then in one stormy night
The ship sank many people died
But those people who survived
Were slaughtered by the devils hand

And if you come to the place
Where all the people rest in peace
Be aware of the devils hand
His ghost lives there on the strand

And God was not on my side
Through rain and storm many sailors died
And so many times I heard the cry
Oh, Lord tell me why
The Batavia must die
